About this Event

We'll make soap in the science lab. The members of the class decide on the color, the essential oils to use for scent, the degree of hardness/softness, and even the sudsiness (that's not a real word) of the soap.

We'll briefly talk about the history and chemistry of soap, however most of the time will be spent mixing a the ingredients to produce the soap you've designed. Hardness/softness is a result of the ratio of different oils (for example, Coconut Oil, Vegetable Oil, Lard) you can choose from. Then we'll calculate the proper amount Sodium Hydroxide to use, based on the oil mixture. After we mix all that, we'll add some essential oil for scent and colored mica flakes, pour it into several different molds that we have, and that's your soap.

Once you've done this, you can use the equipment here to make batches of soap on your own.
