About this Event

Glass Beadmaking 101 Introduction

During this class we will set you on the path to make your own glass beads.
Safety, History and Basic Techniques will be taught.
Glass beads will be available the next day for pickup after they have cooled.

After this class you should be safe coming into the Makerspace on your own to practice making beads using a Hothead torch.

Class fee - $50 to be paid to the instructor at the beginning of the class
(Classes are going to be kept small for better instruction, 1 on 1 classes are available)

Supplies --------
Gas - Student are to bring at least 1 1lb canister of Mapp Gas (Propylene) with them to the class, 2 or 3 canisters are preferred. You will probably only use up 1 canister but due to tank frosting it is better to use up 1/2 of 2 separate tanks. Mapp Gas can be purchased from most hardware stores in the Welding or Plumbing sections. Look for the yellow canisters.

Glass - we will be working with 104 COE Moretti/Effetre glass rods. Specific colors will be provided as they are easier to work with. (You are welcome to bring glass from home to work with see me to discuss glass compatibility.)

Special Considerations and Warnings

Please NOTE - Working with molten glass in inherently dangerous. You will get burned at some time by your glass. We will do everything we can to reduce and avoid it but it is at your own risk.
Minors can only attend with parental approval and supervision.

Clothing --------
Please wear ALL NATURAL FIBERS and CLOSED TOE SHOES. eg. Jeans sneakers and a cotton or linen shirt are fine. Good skin coverage is highly recommended, avoid low cut necklines. Glass can and will shoot small high temperature frit that can melt synthetic fibers to your skin.
Eye protection will be provided however if you have your own didymium or sodium flare glasses you are welcome to bring and use them.
