About this Event

In this class for total beginner and intermediate hobbyists, we will jump in with both feet and Make circuits to exercise 24" strips with 34 individually addressable RGB LEDs. These fascinating components have finally dropped into the hobby price range. Understanding libraries, current ratings and other details is challenging to beginners but we will run through that in a presentation and then you will wire up your own circuit, load programs and tweak them to make it better. All parts except your laptop are provided.

Goals are to:
- Wire up simple circuits on the breadboard to control a strip.
- Download provided programs to the Arduino.
- Make simple program changes to customize a program. We will not cover programming but will discuss changing certain lines to customize results.
- Leave with the knowledge, documentation, parts list and programs to acquire your own parts to repeat the exercises at home and expand on them.

I like to encourage students without electronics or programming experience to see that its possible to jump into the Arduino hobby and see that it can be easy and fun. Knowledge can be furthered by taking other DMS classes, internet tutorials and youtube videos.

Students will each use a parts kit containing an Arduino Nano, a Wemos D1 Mini ESP8266, a WS2812B LED strip, breadboard, potentiometer and other components. Other sensors are available for advanced folks who wish to design their own projects.

I will bring USB drives with a complete installation including libraries and programs for Windows systems. If you plan to bring an Apple or Linux laptop, try to install Arduino from the following link. If there are any problems, we can do it in class.

The class is limited to six so I can work with everyone as needed.

Special Considerations and Warnings

Please bring a notebook computer with a USB port. Some thin notebooks do not include a USB port but have USB dongles available.
