Slab plates and simple and easy to craft. The 'maker' has freedom to customize the plate by using texture, controlling size and by the height of feet.
This is the first class of a two part beginners hand building class to learn the full ceramics process with hands on help from the teacher. You will start by learning how to hand build a ceramics piece by slab-rolling, coiling, and/or pinching, glazing a piece, and ending with a finished product.
In this class you will:
Hand build a ceramic piece of your choice
Choose the desired technique for hand building your ceramic piece
Learn how to attach pieces together by scoring and using slip
Learn how to thoroughly clean the hand building work tables after finishing your ceramic piece
Learn the process of making ceramics at DMS to correctly store and place pieces on the shelves at each stage of the production process
Briefly get insight into the next steps taught in the following classes, Beginners Glazing 103
MAKE SURE TO SIGN UP FOR BEGINNERS GLAZING 103 TO FINISH YOUR PIECE (at least a week to 10 days after this class)
Special Considerations and Warnings
Everyone moves through classes at their own pace. When registering for classes back to back, either in the same department or in other departments, please give yourself plenty of time between classes as you may need more time than scheduled to complete a class and/or project.
NO ‘1’ SIZE FITS ALL
We highly recommend that you take multiple classes from multiple teachers. There are many ways to get an amazing end result and each teacher has their own unique way of creating and throwing with clay.
While many of us would teach for free, honorarium is a benefit to our members and allows us to get paid for the time that we take to share our knowledge with others. In order to get honorarium, there must be a minimum of 3 students that attend the class. The current system has a glitch which makes a student cancellation very difficult. If you cancel, it will not open up the space so another can take it. Our classes fill up very quickly and our department is very active. Please consider your schedule and availability ahead time. If there aren’t enough students to take the class, please note that the class might be cancelled.
By signing up for this class, you are consenting that if you should feel ill and/or have a fever prior to the class, you will stay home and not attend this class. Should you attend this class and test positive for covid recently afterward, you will notify DMS/the instructor so that they can notify their classmates that they were potentially exposed to COVID.
By signing up for this class, you are consenting to photography and videography. Photography and videography obtained during the class may be used for DMS Ceramics promotional purposes via social media.
