About this Event

This is the first class of a three part beginners class to learn the full ceramics process with hands on help from the teacher, start by learning how to use the pottery wheel to throw a basic cylindrical shape or bowl, trimming and adding a decorative foot to a pot, glazing a pot, and ending with a finished product.

In this class you will:
Watch a demonstration on how to throw on the potter’s wheel by the teacher
Learn about the different types and applications of clay
Learn about the fundamentals and the process of wedging a piece of clay
Practice the stages to center a piece of clay on the wheel
Practice opening a centered piece of clay on the wheel
Practice pulling walls on an opened piece of clay on the wheel
Shape a piece of clay into a pot
Learn how to thoroughly clean the wheels after throwing
Learn the process of making ceramics at DMS to correctly store and place pieces on the shelves at each stage of the production process
Briefly get insight into the next steps taught in the following classes, Beginners Trimming 102 and Beginners Glazing 103

Please keep in mind that throwing takes practice, and that this class will focus more on the techniques.

Special Considerations and Warnings
Throwing can get messy! Please wear clothes that you won’t mind getting dirty. Although not required, it is also recommended to have short fingernails as it is easier to throw with shorter nails.
