About this Event

This is the first of a two-part class for beginning hand builders. We will create a tripod vessel from soft slab clay we have rolled out using the slab roller. The tripod vessel is one of the most versatile vessels that can take on many functions including mug, bowl, vase, box from a single basic form. Depending on the form you chose will learn to use use all three disciplines of hand-built pottery: pinch, coil and slab.

In part 1 “Beginning Hand Building: The tripod vessel Part 1” you will learn:
• Basic tools for hand building
• Proper use of the slab roller
• Slab preparation
• Using templates and texture
• How to make slip
• Forming the vessel including slip score attaching
• Optionally attaching handles and lids
• Proper cleaning of the ceramic workspace
In part 2- “Beginning Hand Building: The tripod vessel Part 2” you will learn (held on a following date, please sign up)

• Finishing the vessel for firing
• The drying process
• How to fix it if something goes wrong
• How, when to move your piece through the shelving system for the firing process
• Discuss next steps and the glazing process

Special Considerations and Warnings

Clay can be messy! Please wear clothes that you won’t mind getting dirty.
Clay will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own clay if there is a particular clay body you prefer or if you prefer to make a larger vessel.
