About this Event

Time to make soap in the Science lab!

In the class, we'll briefly talk about the history and chemistry of soap, however most of the time will be spent selecting and mixing the ingredients to produce the soap.

Hardness/softness is a result of the ratio of different oils (for example, Coconut Oil, Vegetable Oil, Palm Oil) you can choose from. We'll calculate the proper amount sodium hydroxide (yep, that's lye but I think sodium hydroxide sounds so much better), which depends on the types and amounts of oils you've chosen.

You can add some essential oil for scent and tinted mica flakes for color. You can mix or swirl multiple colors and scents too, or you can leave the soap free of scent or color. Or...we can split the batch and make two different versions of soap.

After we mix all the ingredients, you'll pour the mixture it into several different molds that we have, and soap's on!

By the next day, the soap is ready to come out of the mold, and you can take 2 or 3 bars home. PLEASE NOTE: The recommended cure time before you use the soap is 6 weeks. I've used it by the 4th week, but 6 weeks is recommended to let the soap cure completely.

Once you've done this, you can use the equipment here to make batches of soap on your own.
