About this Event
NOTE: This revamped class now uses front surface, optical quality mirrors!
Kaleidoscopes can cost hundreds, even thousands of dollars (we’re not building one of those), or just a few bucks (that’s the kind we’ll build). In this class, each student will get a chance to build their own kaleidoscope using the components supplied for the glass. If you want to personalize your kaleidoscope, you can bring some of your own items to class. For example, the outside of the kaleidoscope is a cardboard tube that’ll we’ll cover in colored paper. You can draw on that paper, or if you want to bring your own covering - a page that is already done, pictures from a magazine - that’s cool too.
For the end piece, which is the container that the mirrors are aimed at to create the kaleidoscopic image, we’ll have stained glass, plastic, and whatnot you can use. Or, feel free to bring some of your own favorite objects from home to customize the image. Flat objects smaller than a dime, and objects smaller than an M&M will work best.
Each registered student will leave with their hand-made kaleidoscope.
Special Considerations and Warnings
- Students under 13 years old have to be accompanied by an adult during the entire class. (The adult doesn’t have to register for the class if they don’t want to participate.)
- Anyone is welcome to sit in and watch, but only registered students will build a kaleidoscope to take home.
