About this Event
Have you always wanted to learn to solder so that you can take your Electronic Making to the next level? If so, this is the class for you!
In this one-to- two hour, hands-on class, you will learn the basics of soldering small, electronic components. You will be taught the safe and proper usage of the tools and materials required. No previous experience is required.
All tools and materials will be provided. You will get to build a free-form resistor sculpture on a prototyping board to get you started. Then you get to build your very own, working, 2 LED blinker circuit.
All ages are welcome. If you are 12 or under, it would be best if one or more of your sponsors were also in attendance.
I learned to solder at a young age and have found it to be a very empowering skill. I have been teaching this class for several years and really enjoy seeing people transition from "I wish I could make something like that" to "I can make that!"
To ensure sufficient individual attention, this class is limited to five participants. Therefore, if you sign up and are not able to attend, please make sure to cancel your reservation in time to allow someone else to participate.
Special Considerations and Warnings
Soldering is an inherently dangerous activity. The temperatures used by the soldering irons are hot enough to melt metal (500F-800F) and can cause serious, painful burns. Safety instruction is provided at all stages of the class.
We will be using solder that contains lead. Lead is a poison and can cause serious health issues with extended exposure. Lead-free solder is available but is more difficult to use, especially for beginners. Your limited exposure in this class room can be safely mitigated by simply washing your hands after the class and any other time you handle lead-based solder. I have been soldering for over 40 years. I have my lead levels tested on a regular basis and still show no detectable amounts of lead in my system. Additionally, while breathing solder fumes for an expended period of time (i.e., all day, every day for years) can prove detrimental to your health, your limited exposure in this class will be minimal.
Protective eye wear will be provided to anyone wishing to use it. It's your call.
We will be handling and identifying small components. Please bring your good reading glasses, if required.
